How to add page numbers to a PDF without uploading it
You can add a visible label such as "Page 1 of 12" to every page in a PDF. The browser-local tool keeps the source file on your device.
Updated 6 October 2026. The tool adds page labels to a downloaded copy.
Number the PDF in three steps
- Open the PDF page numbering tool and select one PDF up to 50 MiB and 50 pages.
- Enter the number for the first page and choose a position for the label.
- Choose Add page numbers, download the result and review it before sharing it.
The conversion runs in the browser. The tool does not upload the PDF or require an account.
Choose the first number
The first PDF page does not have to be page 1. Enter another starting number when the file is an appendix, a chapter or one part of a longer document. The tool increments that number on each following page.
Scanned PDFs also work
Page numbering adds visible text to each page. It does not depend on selectable text, so a scanned PDF can still be numbered. This does not add OCR or make the scan searchable.
Review the downloaded copy
Open the result in a separate PDF viewer and check the first, middle and last pages. Make sure the label is visible and does not cover important content. Keep the original until the numbered copy is approved.
Common limits
The browser tool accepts one PDF up to 50 MiB and 50 pages. Encrypted, damaged or unsupported PDFs may fail. Larger or complex files may need more browser memory. Normal page and anonymous analytics requests still occur, but the selected PDF is not uploaded for processing.
