How the counts work
Why does another editor show a different word count?
This tool uses your browser's native word segmentation with English language rules. Punctuation, hyphenated words and other scripts can produce different counts in Word, Google Docs or a submission form. Use the destination's counter when its limit is binding.
What counts as a character?
We count graphemes: visible character groups, including combined accents and emoji sequences. The first count includes whitespace. The second excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks. A website may instead count code points or UTF-16 units, so its limit can differ.
How are paragraphs counted?
A blank line separates paragraphs. A single line break inside a paragraph does not start a new one.
Is my text sent anywhere?
The counter processes text locally and does not upload it or save it in browser storage. Loading the page makes normal website and analytics requests. Analytics records a counter-use event, not your text, target or counts.
Is there an ideal word count for SEO?
This tool measures length, not quality or ranking potential. Choose a length that answers your reader's question. For text already in Word or Google Docs, the built-in counter may be all you need.
