How to resize an image without distorting it

Use maximum dimensions rather than forcing a new shape. That lets the image become smaller while keeping the original relationship between its width and height.

For JPG, PNG and WebP images.

Maximum dimensions versus exact dimensions

A maximum width or height is an upper limit. The image scales down until it fits inside the limits, and the other side changes by the same proportion. This keeps the original aspect ratio.

Exact dimensions are different. If the requested box has a different shape from the source, filling it requires cropping, stretching or leaving empty space. The free image resizer uses maximum dimensions. It does not crop or stretch an image to force an exact box, and it never enlarges an image that is already smaller than the limits.

For a 1920x1080 target, enter 1920 as the maximum width and 1080 as the maximum height. A 16:9 source can reach 1920x1080. A source with another shape will fit inside that box and keep its own proportions.

How to resize an image online

  1. Open the image resizer.
  2. Select a JPG, PNG or WebP file.
  3. Enter a maximum width, a maximum height, or both.
  4. Choose JPEG, PNG or WebP output and adjust quality when the format supports it.
  5. Review the preview and download the result.

The image is processed in your browser. It is not uploaded or saved by this tool.

Choose an output format

PNG uses lossless encoding, but the output can be larger. JPEG and WebP can produce smaller files with lossy encoding, so compare the preview with the original before downloading. If the source has transparency, JPEG replaces transparent areas with white. Use PNG or WebP when you need to keep transparency.

The Canvas conversion creates a still image. It does not retain the original camera metadata or animation.

Limits and quality checks

The tool accepts files up to 20 MiB. Neither side may exceed 8,192 pixels, and the total image may contain no more than 24 million pixels. These limits apply before resizing.

Reducing dimensions removes pixel data. A lower quality setting can reduce JPEG or WebP file size, but it can also remove detail. If the result is not smaller, try a lower quality, a smaller maximum dimension, or another output format. There is no guaranteed reduction for every source image.

Image resizing questions

How do I resize an image without distorting it?

Set a maximum width or height instead of forcing unrelated exact dimensions. The image keeps its original aspect ratio, so it is scaled down without stretching or squashing.

How do I resize an image to 1920x1080?

Set maximum width to 1920 and maximum height to 1080. The result fits inside that box while keeping the original aspect ratio. It is exactly 1920x1080 only when the source has the same 16:9 shape.

Can I resize an image to exact dimensions without cropping?

Not for every source shape. Exact unrelated dimensions require cropping, stretching or empty space. This tool uses maximum dimensions and does not crop or stretch the image.

Can I resize an image without uploading it?

Yes. The tool processes the selected image in your browser. The image is not uploaded or saved by the tool.

What image formats can I resize?

The tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 20 MiB. Neither side may exceed 8,192 pixels and the image may contain no more than 24 million pixels.

Does resizing an image reduce quality?

Reducing dimensions removes pixel data. JPEG and WebP output can also use lossy encoding, while PNG uses lossless encoding. Check the preview before downloading.
