Common questions
How do I check a law firm is genuine?
Start by finding the firm's register entry above by name, SRA number or website address and checking its authorisation status. A register entry alone does not prove the person contacting you is that firm, so verify the contact details independently: phone the number shown on the SRA register, not a number from an email, because criminals clone real firms and swap in their own contact details.
The firm is not in the results. What now?
Try the trading name, the full regulated name and the SRA number from the firm's website or letterhead. If nothing matches, confirm on the official SRA register at sra.org.uk before sending money or documents. A firm genuinely absent from the register is not regulated by the SRA.
Is this the official SRA register?
No. This search runs over a copy of the register data that the SRA supplies and that is refreshed daily. The official register at sra.org.uk is always the definitive source, and also covers individual solicitors, which this search does not.
What do the statuses mean?
They come from the SRA's own data dictionary. "Authorised" means the firm is authorised by the SRA, and "authorised with conditions" means the same with conditions attached. "Authorised but ceased trading" (CEASE) means the firm has stopped trading while still authorised, which happens for ordinary reasons such as closures and mergers. "No longer authorised" (REVOKE) and "closed down by the SRA" (INTERVENE) mean the firm is not currently practising under SRA authorisation. Any of these is a fact to check further on the official register, not an accusation.
